A gentle guide from Elaine

Herbs & Homeopathy, Explained

New to natural dog care? Here’s a simple, honest guide to our two ranges: what they are, how they differ, and how to choose the right one for your dog.

Two approaches, one philosophy

Natural care, made with love

Since founding The Dog Herbalist in 2012, Elaine has drawn on over 40 years of caring for dogs to create two gentle ranges: herbal powders that you add to your dog’s food, and homeopathic drops prepared with the guidance of our homeopathic consultant.

Both share the same aim: to support your dog’s natural wellbeing in a kind, gentle way, alongside a good diet, plenty of exercise and your vet’s care.

Nature’s oldest helpers

What are herbs?

Herbs are plants valued for far more than their flavour. Their leaves, flowers, roots, seeds and bark have been used for thousands of years to support the wellbeing of people and animals alike.

Herbs naturally contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other plant compounds. Added to your dog’s food as a supplement, they bring natural variety and nourishment to their everyday diet, something many owners feel is missing from modern, processed food.

How can herbs benefit dogs?

🌱

Everyday vitality

Nettle, kelp and alfalfa are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

🍃

Digestion

Slippery elm, chamomile and fennel are traditionally used to support a settled, happy tummy.

🦴

Joints & mobility

Turmeric and ginger are traditionally used to support supple, comfortable joints.

💚

Calm & balance

Chamomile, valerian and lemon balm are traditionally used to support a relaxed, settled mood.

✨

Skin & coat

Nettle, burdock and kelp are traditionally used to support healthy skin and a glossy coat.

🛡️

Natural defences

Herbs such as echinacea are traditionally used to support the body’s own natural defences.

⚠️ Not every herb is right for dogs. Some plants that are fine for people can be harmful to dogs, so it’s best to choose blends made specifically for them. Elaine only uses herbs chosen for canine care.

A gentle tradition

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy was developed in Germany in the late 1700s by Dr Samuel Hahnemann. It’s based on the principle of “like with like”: the idea that a substance which causes certain signs in large amounts can, in tiny and highly diluted amounts, encourage the body to find its own natural balance.

Remedies are made from natural sources such as plants and minerals, through a process called potentisation: repeated dilution and vigorous shaking. Homeopathy also takes a whole-dog approach, looking at your dog’s temperament, habits and surroundings as well as the area you’d like to support.

Why do owners choose homeopathy?

💧

Easy to give

Just a few drops, with nothing to mix into food. Ideal for fussy eaters.

🌿

A gentle approach

Remedies are very highly diluted, which is why many owners see homeopathy as a gentle option.

🎆

For life’s moments

Owners often reach for drops around fireworks, travel, or changes at home.

🐶

Every life stage

You’ll find drops in our Puppy, Senior and Pregnancy ranges. Check each product page for guidance.

🧡

Pairs with herbs

Many owners use drops alongside a herbal powder for all-round support.

🩺 Homeopathy is a complementary approach, so we always recommend using it alongside, never instead of, your vet’s care.

Can I use both?

Yes, they work beautifully together

Many owners pair a herbal powder with homeopathic drops for the same area of wellbeing. That’s exactly why we created our Power House Bundles: two remedies that sit hand in hand, for less than buying them separately.

Getting started

  1. Start with one remedy. It’s easier to see how your dog gets on when you introduce one thing at a time.
  2. Introduce it gently. For powders, mix a little into a tasty meal at first and build up to the amount on the product page.
  3. Keep it consistent. Natural care works best as part of a steady daily routine.
  4. Keep a little diary. Jot down how your dog seems: energy, appetite, coat and mood. It’s lovely to look back on.
  5. Ask us anything. Not sure what to choose? Take our quiz or email Elaine, who’s always happy to help.
🩺

Natural care works best as a team

Our remedies are made to support your dog’s natural wellbeing alongside, never instead of, your vet’s care. Please speak to your vet before starting anything new if your dog is pregnant or nursing, on medication, or has an ongoing health condition, and never stop prescribed treatment. If your dog is unwell, always see your vet first.
